Step 3: Joint Preparation

The joints are cleaned with compressed air or water to remove dust and debris. This ensures the new mortar bonds properly.

Step 4: Mortar Mixing

Here's where experience matters. The new mortar must match the original in color, texture, and composition. Using mortar that's too hard (like modern Portland cement) can actually damage old brick by trapping moisture inside. We use lime-based mortar mixes that breathe and flex with the brick.

Step 5: Application

The mortar is pressed into the joints in layers, tooled to match the original joint profile (concave, V-shaped, weathered, etc.). Once it sets, the excess is brushed off.
